Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Baseball team hosted Humboldt on Wednesday for each team’s regular season finale.

It was Aaden Techen getting the start for Spencer while Humboldt rolled out Gabe Flatau.

The two teams traded scoreless first innings, and then after Techen threw a second shutout frame, the Tigers struck in the bottom of the 2nd. Both Jackson Eilts and George Lawson drew walks before Cohen Rittenhouse laced a single to bring in Eilts. Lawson would later score on a sacrifice fly from Larson Volk to give Spencer a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats would cover that deficit in the 4th inning, when Keegan Groat launched a home run over the left center field fence with his brother Griffen on the bases to tie the game at 2 apiece.

After Spencer struck for 5 straight baserunners in that 2nd inning, Humboldt relieved Flatau with Jackson Flaherty. Flaherty dominated, keeping Spencer in check from when he came in for the next 5.1 innings.

In the meantime, the Humboldt bats came to life after the 4th inning 2-run-shot by Groat, scoring 2 runs in the 5th, 4 in the 6th, then another in the top of the 7th, giving the Wildcats a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

After allowing a walk and 2 singles with only one out in the bottom of the 7th, Flaherty was relieved by the Sophomore closer Ascher Gonder with the bases loaded.

Cohen Rittenhouse struck out against Gonder for out number 2, but then Larson Vulk ripped a ball in to the left-center field gap, clearing the bases with a triple and bringing Spencer within 3.

Gonder locked down the final out though on a strikeout, and Humboldt held off the Tigers to win 9-6.

The win went to Jackson Flaherty, who was excellent in 5.1 innings of relief work, allowing 3 runs, all in the 7th inning on 7 hits, only walked 2 and struck out 4.

Asher Gonder picked up the save in 0.2 innings of work, allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit and striking out 2.

Despite a good start, Aaden Techen absorbed the loss for Spencer, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3.

Humboldt wraps up the regular season at 25-6 and prepare for a home, postseason date with Clear Lake on Friday.

Spencer will also be at home for the Substate Quarterfinals against Storm Lake after finishing the regular season at 11-13. You can hear that game right here on News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD and northwestiowanow.com.
