Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) – Local drivers will see an increased law enforcement presence this week, June 17-19, as the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and area law enforcement highlight Iowa’s “Move Over” law.
Iowa State Trooper Kevin Krull, stopped by the KICD studio to remind motorists to change lanes or slow down when approaching any vehicle with flashing lights on the shoulder – including emergency, tow, commercial, and even passenger vehicles with hazards on.
This initiative comes as a critical reminder of the law, in effect since 2002, which aims to protect roadside workers and drivers. Violations carry a $210.25 fine and could lead to license suspension in cases involving damage, injury, or fatalities. The push for awareness follows tragic incidents statewide, including the loss of two Hanifen Towing employees in Des Moines in 2011 due to drivers failing to move over.
