Paullina, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Roorda Dairy in O’Brien County has been ordered to pay more than $38,000 for a manure spill last July that resulted in over 100,000 killed fish. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Roorda Dairy will have to submit its standard operating procedures for manure application, equipment insprection, employee training and manure irrigation methods to the department for approval.

DNR staff believe around 107, 000 fish were killed as a result of the spill and the elevated nutrient levels it caused. Roorda Dairy had a dam built to diverte manure back up the field, but the heavy rains in July destroyed the make-shift damn, causing manure to flow into Mud Creek, which joins Mill Creek. The consent order estimates the fill kill was 9.6 miles . There were additional fines, and the cost of the fish which is valued at $30,791 that Roorda Dairy has already agreed to pay.
