Estherville, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The occupant of an Estherville home was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation after a fire Tuesday.

Fire Chief Travis Sheridan says the department was dispatched to 1321 North 12th Street for a kitchen fire. The first officer on the scene worked with residents to keep the fire from spreading with an extinguisher, and the first crew to arrive put the fire out and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the house.

It appears the fire started when items were left on top of a stove that accidentally got turned on. There was significant fire damage to the kitchen and extensive smoke damage throughout the rest of the structure.

Firefighters remained at the scene for two hours. The Wallingford Fire Department, Estherville Police, Ambulance, and city Electrical Departments assisted.
