Pocahontas, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — A sixteen-year-old has been charged with burning down the shelter house in a Pocahontas city park.

The structure at Elbert Park – which is located directly North of the courthouse on Main Street – was totally destroyed Monday night. Police say they made a positive identification of a male juvenile from surveillance video.

The individual was charged with second degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief because of the fire and was also charged with possession of marijuana when he was taken into custody. Since he is under the age of 18 his name has not been made public. He was booked into the youth detention facility in Cherokee.
