Sheldon, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Five fire departments were called to the Hull Co-Op in Sheldon Wednesday in case a small fire in the feed pellet production area spread. It did not.
The Sheldon fire department was dispatched to 105 West 8th Street about 2:20 in the afternoon on the report of smoke. At that time the manager thought the fire was out. When the smoke got thicker all employees were evacuated and Fire Chief Brad Hindt called for backup from Sanborn, Boyden, Orange City, and Sioux Center.
The fire was contained to a feed pellet cooler, storage bin, and exhaust fan. The auger system was unable to remove the smoldering pellets so they called Holtrop Excavating for a payloader. .
The Sheldon fire department was on the scene for seven hours. At one point 47 firefighters were there. The Sheldon Police Department, O’Brien County Sheriff’s Department, both O’Brien and Sioux County Emergency Management, and Sheldon Community Ambulance team were also on site.
