Sheldon, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt says a call yesterday was one of the most unique he’s ever seen. The department was dispatched about 1:30 Thursday afternoon to the area of 3149 Nest Avenue – that’s about a mile North of town on OLD Highway 60.
It appears a discarded cigarette ignited dry grass in the East ditch. But when the flames reached the culvert under the road, a plastic liner caught on fire, and spread the fire under the road and into the West ditch.
The fire department used about one thousand gallons of water to extinguish the liner fire and was back in service an hour later. The Sheldon police department was also on scene. .
