Emmetsburg, Ia (KICD) – Emmetsburg hosted the 2024 Twin Lakes Conference Cross Country Championships at the Iowa Lakes Disc Golf Course.
Strong winds drug times down across the board on a mostly wide-open course.
In the Girls race, Nora Peterson of Alta-Aurelia would fight off Manson-Northwest Webster’s Alyssa Richman after the two battled for most of the race for the Championship spot. Peterson ran 19:13.2 to win the Twin Lakes Conference individual title.
West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach would finish 4th with a time of 21:05.2. Schupbach talked about how she battled the 30+ mile an hour wind gusts.
Linnea Bloom of Sioux Central came in 5th at 21:08.0, followed by Alta-Aurelia’s Hayden Berkland in 6th with a time of 21:11.4. Sioux Central’s Marley Madsen would finish 7th at 21:21.1, beating Alta-Aurelia’s Breyer Anderson by a couple of seconds. Anderson was 8th at 21:23.6. Sioux Central took 9th and 10th with Nora Christian running 21:23.9 and Karina Bloom going 22:24.6.
Sioux Central and Alta-Aurelia tied at 42 for the team title, pushing the scoring to the 6th runner. Even that was only decided by 4 seconds as Sioux Central’s Quinn Wilkinson was 20th with a time of 24:04.2, just ahead of Tegan Robertson of Alta-Aurelia who placed 21st at 24:08.1. That gave Sioux Central the Twin Lakes Conference team title.
Sioux Central will now pursue a State Qualifier Championship next week in Holstein. Linnea Bloom says there is some confidence they can get it done.
South Central Calhoun took 3rd at 113. West Bend-Mallard was 4th, Emmetsburg 5th, Pocahontas Area 7th, and GTRA 9th.
In the Boys race, Redge Potts of South Central Calhoun broke away to win the Twin Lakes Conference Championship with a time of 16:57.8. Potts battled with Sioux Central’s Lucos Wernimont who took 2nd at 17:19.4 and Manson-Northwest Webster’s Thatcher Oswald in 3rd at 17:26.3 for much of the race. Potts told KICD when he decided to pull away from them.
Alta-Aurelia’s Jacob Launderville was 6th at 18:10.9. Sioux Central put 3 more runners in the top 10 with Leighton Sippel at 7, clocking 18:12., Jack Christian 9th at 18:36.7, and Landon Driver 10th with a time of 18:53.
The Rebels took the Twin Lakes Conference Team Title with 42 points. They will try to move on to the State Meet as a team. Here is what Lucos Wernimont says his team will have to do in order to qualify.
Manson-Northwest Webster took 2nd with 58, East Sac County was 3rd with 72. Alta-Aurelia was 4th, Newell–Fonda 7th, and Pocahontas Area 8th.
The Girls and Boys State Qualifying Cross Country Meet for 1A and 2A will be held on Thursday, October 24th.
