On Friday, Class 1A and 2A had the Regional Softball Semifinals.
#1 seed in Class 1A Region 3, Newell-Fonda, got past #4 seed Kingsley-Pierson 7-2. Newell-Fonda will host Woodbine at 7:00 on Monday for the Regional Championship.
#4 seed North Union fell to #1 seed St. Edmond of Fort Dodge in the 1A Region 7 Semifinal.
In Class 2A Region 8, the #3 seed Pocahontas Area’s season came to an end with a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of #2 seed Central Springs.
Class 3A, 4A, and 5A Softball Regional Semifinals were played on Saturday.
The #1 seed in Class 3A Region 6, Estherville Lincoln Central, handled #4 seed Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 8-1. ELC advances to the Regional Championship to play the #2 seed Humboldt.
In Class 4A Region 7, the #4 seed Spencer lost 8-0 to the #1 seed North Polk. On the other side of the bracket, #2 seed Storm Lake was upset by #3 seed Boone 5-4.
District Finals in 1A and 2A Baseball were played on Saturday.
MMCRU fell 5-0 to Conference foes Gehlen Catholic of Le Mars in the Class 1A Substate 1 District 2 Championship.
For Class 1A Substate 8 District 15, #3seed Newell-Fonda lost in the District Final to #1 seed Coon Rapids-Bayard.
#2 seed Pocahontas Area lost in the Class 2A Substate 1 District 1 Championship 8-3 to #1 seed Unity Christian of Orange City. On the other side of the Substate in District 2, the #3 seed Estherville Lincoln Central’s Cinderella Story continues with a 7-5 upset of #1 seed Forest City. The Substate Championship at a to-be-determined site between Unity Christian of Orange City and Estherville Lincoln Central will be a rematch of last season’s Substate Championship when Unity Christian went on a Cinderella run of their own, beating Estherville Lincoln Central 3-2. The Substate 1 Championship will be played at 7:00 on Tuesday.
The #2 seed in Substate 2 District 4, Okoboji, upset the #1 seed Spirit Lake 15-12 and move on to the Substate Championship. That game will be played at a to-be-determined site on Tuesday against the District 3 Champion and #1 seed West Lyon.
In Class 3A Substate 2, the #4 seed Spencer and #5 seed Storm Lake began their Quarterfinal matchup on Friday in Spencer. The game was suspended due to weather with Spencer leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The game was picked back up on Saturday afternoon, and Spencer picked up the 5-3 win, their 3rd victory against their Lakes Conference rivals this season. The Tigers will play the #1 seed MOC-Floyd Valley on Monday at 7:00 in Orange City. That game will be broadcast on News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD and northwestiowanow.com.
