Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls Tennis team hosted Bishop Heelan of Sioux City on Wednesday in the Regional Semifinals.

Position 1 singles went to Heelan as Aila Friis beat Abbey Crew 2 sets to 1.

Maria Ernesti of Heelan took Position 2 singles 2-0 winning set 1 6-4 and Set 2 6-2.

That would be all the Crusaders could collect for wins as the Spencer Tiger depth leaned on yet another team. Brynn Merchant won Position 3 singles in 2 sets 6-0 and 6-2.

In Position 4 singles, it was Kate Elser of Spencer completing a full sweep with two 6-0 set wins.

The Position 5 singles went to Spencer’s Jill Kabrick in a thriller. Kabrick lost to Joy Bishwokarma in set 1 6-4, then won set 2 by 7-2 tiebreaker. Set 3 went to Kabrick, giving Spencer a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers got out of Singles with a 4-2 lead with Allie Ewalt shutting out Mya Loe in 2 sets.

All Spencer needed was 1 Doubles win and that came from Ucella and McFarland who won set 1 6-4 and set 2 6-3 over Bishwokarma and Loe in the #3 doubles.

That gave Spencer the 5-2 win and advanced them to the Regional Championship match.

In the other regional semifinal, Spirit Lake/Okoboji traveled to Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Position 1 singles went to Camryn Glass of SB-L who took Set 1 6-0 and Set 2 6-3 over Sally Androski.

Position 2 also went to the Warriors in singles as Carley Rooney took Set 1 6-3 and Set 2 3-2 from Bethany Frostestad.

Stella Britton of Sergeant Bluff-Luton beat Ebba Bjornstad of Spirit Lake/Okoboji 6-0 and 6-1 in 2 sets.

Clara Britton picked up another 2-0 win for the Warriors with a 6-1 and 6-2 sweep of Shelby Kleckner.

Kaeley Abels of SB-L beat Isla Nelson of SL/O 2 sets to 0 7-5 and 6-1 in Position 5 singles.

Madison Grote of Sergeant Bluff-Luton picked up Position 6 singles 6-4 and 6-3 for a full sweep of the singles matches for the Warriors.

This sets up a Regional Championship matchup at Riverview Tennis Courts in Spencer on Saturday as the 12-0 Tigers host the 11-1 Warriors. Spencer won the regular season dual between the two teams back on August 7th 7-2. Saturday will have a 10:00 start time and the winner advances to the Class 1A State Tournament.
