Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The opening day at Spencer’s outdoor aquatic center has been pushed back due to a leak or leaks. Park and Rec Director Bob Fullhardt says it first appeared things were ready to go – even after last year’s flood.

But after noticing a problem with water flows in the pool, ponding water was discovered Thursday.

Fullhardt tells Northwestiowanow.com there have been perennial smaller leaks for years, but this one appears to be a major one.

Last year the Bolton and Menk engineering firm recommended 4 million dollars be spent to extend the life of the aquatic center for another 10 to 12 years. City officials are still considering whether to stick that money into the 25-year-old structure or to plan for a new aquatic center – possibly one indoors that can be used year around.
