Spencer, IA (northwestiowanow.com) — Members of the Spencer City Council Tuesday night expressed a wish that they could make all property owners whole after the flood, but with limited public money they’re prioritizing assistance programs that will do the most good for the largest number of people. They have approved the first two microgrant programs.
Acting City Manager Kevin Robinson says property owners can apply for up to 3 thousand dollars in matching funds to assist in the restoration of foundations.
The second microgrant program is one thousand dollars per property that had permanent damage because of “x” s that were painted during the height of the emergency.
A third potential microgrant to help restore rental properties will be discussed at the next regular council meeting.
The city pumped the brakes on the rental microgrant while they researched federal Community Development Block Grant money. The council has now decided to pursue both opportunities as the federal money will take longer to arrive. Deadline to apply for the first two microgrant programs is noon on December 31st.
