Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls and Boys Basketball teams hosted Cherokee Tuesday night in the Fieldhouse for Lakes Conference play.
It was a tough night for the Tigers with turnovers and rebounding for the first half especially. Cherokee led 18-7 after the first quarter than outscored Spencer 19-7 in the 2nd, making it 37-14 going into the half. Spencer played a better brand of basketball in the 2nd half, posting 13 points in the 3rd quarter, but the high-powered Braves continued to score at a high rate, and held a 28-point lead going into the 4th. Cherokee would outscore the Tigers down the stretch 15-9 and came away with a dominant 70-36 win.
Addy Wolfswinkel put together another strong night scoring for the Braves with 26 points. 6 total athletes scored for Cherokee with 3 in double-figures.
Kennedy Graettinger led 7 Spencer scorers with 8 on the evening.
Spencer falls to 4-14 on the year and 0-7 in Conference play after their 9th straight loss.
Cherokee is playing their best Basketball of the season, winners of 8 in a row and are now 16-2 on the year with a final Lakes Conference record of 6-2.
The Boys game was high scoring from the tip, and Cherokee held a 20-19 lead after the 1st quarter. That lead would be extended to 4 going in to the half with the Braves out in front 36-32. Both teams posted totals in the 3rd quarter over 15 again, and Cherokee led Spencer going into the 4th 58-48. The Tigers weren’t able to string any stops together in the 4th quarter to get a run going, and Cherokee kept them at arm’s length to win 74-60.
Spencer had four of their 7 scorers in double-figures, led by Cael Bruning’s 18.
Coy Lewis scored 21 for Cherokee, with 19 coming in the 2nd half. Jaxon Paulsrud had 20 from the Point Guard position in the win for the Braves.
Cherokee is now 11-6 on the year and will finish Conference play with a 4-4 mark. Next up for the Braves is a tough road trip to Newell-Fonda.
Spencer takes their 2nd straight loss and with fall to 9-8 on the year and 2-5 in League action. The Tigers bring Sioux Central to town on Thursday for some Non-Conference Basketball before wrapping up Conference play on Friday against Storm Lake.
