Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls Tennis Team hosted Bishop Heelan of Sioux City in the Class 1A Region 4 Championship Dual on Saturday at the Dennis Price Tennis Courts in Spencer.
That was Spencer Head Coach Bob Schlaegger after the Tigers battled the Crusaders for almost 4 Hours. Senior Kate Elser said Spencer was ahead of expectations after coming out of singles leading 4-2.
One of those singles wins for Spencer came from Dakoda Lux who used a strong start to lift her to victory.
The Biggest win in singles came from Jill Kabrick, who after a marathon of a match, won in super tiebreaker fashion.
Kennedy Graettinger took one of the losses in singles. The Senior talked about her mindset during the games.
Along with Graettinger, Brynn Merchant also took a loss in singles. The two were very motivated to get back on the court for #1 Doubles, where the pair sealed up the Dual win for Spencer.
With the 5-2-win, Spencer advances to the Class 1A State Tournament at the Caldwell Park Tennis Courts in Pella. The Tigers take the #6 seed and will go up against the #3 seed Pella in the Quarterfinals on October 12th. The Semifinals will also be played October 12th if, Spencer wins, they will face either the #2 seed Boone or the #7 seed Fairfield. The Championship and Consolation Finals will be played on October 13th. Coach Schlaeger talked about what it will take for Spencer to make a deep run and what this means for a strong Senior Class.
