SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – Iowa’s annual Tax-Free Weekend returns this Friday and Saturday, offering a break from sales tax on select clothing and footwear items.

From 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 1 through midnight Saturday, August 2, shoppers can purchase eligible items priced under $100 without paying state or local sales tax. The event is expected to draw crowds to local retailers.

Spencer Main Street Executive Director Nancy Naeve says the weekend benefits not just families preparing for back-to-school shopping, but also supports local businesses…

Retailers across Iowa are required to participate if they are open during the event. That includes both large chains and small businesses, many of which are preparing for increased demand.

The Tax-Free Weekend is designed to ease the financial burden of back-to-school shopping while supporting local businesses. The tax holiday applies only to clothing and footwear items priced under $100. Accessories, school supplies, and electronics are not exempt from taxes during the event.

The Iowa Department of Revenue recommends shoppers check item eligibility before visiting stores. Full details can be found at revenue.iowa.gov.
