Spencer, IA (NorthwestIowaNow.com) – The Spencer School Board, during their Tuesday meeting, approved quotes from Midwestern Mechanical and Woodruff Construction for essential kitchen heating repairs and other facility needs. This decision, however, introduces potential delays for previously planned roof repair and parking lot projects slated for this summer, contingent on the financial outcome of the newly approved initiatives. Board member Phil Beiber cast the dissenting vote, raising concerns regarding the open-bid process and internal communication, while emphasizing the importance of transparency for future undertakings.

Superintendent Terry Hemann acknowledged these concerns and requested understanding for certain financial decisions made during this unique school year, promising more detailed information in future discussions. Despite the approvals, the roof repair and parking lot projects remain on the current project list.

In other business, the board unanimously approved the Budget Guarantee Resolution. This measure, sought due to declining enrollment, secures the district’s budget for the 2026-2027 school year, ensuring no decrease in funding, which is entirely supported by property taxes.

Additionally, the Spencer Education Association (SEA) agreement for the 2025-2026 school year received unanimous approval. The agreement includes a 2.66% salary increase, totaling $82,662, and grants teachers an additional personal day, bringing the annual total to three.

The board also officially approved 159 candidates for graduation from Spencer High School’s Class of 2025. Commencement ceremonies are scheduled for May 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the Spencer Field House. The next Spencer School Board meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in the board room at the Central Administrative Offices.
