Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The first of TWO special city council elections in Spencer is today.

Residents of the 4th ward can vote at the Clay County Administration Building until 8pm. Two candidates are on the ballot: Duane Bates – who was appointed to the fill the vacancy – and Jim Vermeer.

After the city council made the appointment, a special election was called by residents of the ward by petition.

Donovan Wunschel was elected to the post in 2024 but resigned when he was elected Mayor.
