Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — A Spencer woman is behind bars this morning following a series of altercations at a local grocery store Thursday morning.
Police were called to the Hy-Vee on Grand Avenue just after 7:00 a.m. yesterday for a disturbance. When officers arrived, they found 37-year-old Jessica Thornton acting erratically inside the store.
According to investigators, Thornton attacked a store employee and began choking them after staff members asked her to leave.
The situation escalated when officers tried to take her into custody. Police say Thornton resisted arrest and assaulted several officers both at the store and later at the Clay County Jail.
Thornton now faces a long list of charges, including: Willful Injury and Assault on Officers (Class D Felonies) Interference with Official Acts, Public Intoxication and Disorderly Conduct.
She is currently being held in the Clay County Jail on a $5,000 bond. As a reminder, all subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
