Sanborn, IA (northwestiowanow) — A three-vehicle crash west of Sanborn left a Spencer woman injured last week.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred on Highway 18 approximately two miles west of Sanborn on Wednesday, October 7th.

Investigators say 35-year-old Benjamin Van Kekerix of Sheldon was driving a 2009 Peterbilt semi eastbound and preparing to make a left turn. Behind the semi was a 2018 Volvo SUV driven by 40-year-old Michaela Simmons of Spencer, who had slowed to a stop.

Authorities say 45-year-old Henry Saah Nyorkor of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was driving a 2012 Freightliner straight truck when he approached the rear of the SUV and failed to stop, striking the vehicle. The impact pushed Simmons’ Volvo into the rear of the Peterbilt.

All three vehicles sustained extensive damage and were considered total losses.

Van Kekerix and Nyorkor reported no injuries, but Simmons was transported by ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Court records show Nyorkor was charged with failure to reduce speed to a reasonable and proper rate.

The sheriff’s office also reported a second accident at the same location a short time later. No injuries were reported in that incident.
