Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Boys Tennis team hosted the 2026 District Singles and Doubles Tournament at the Riverview Tennis Courts in Spencer and the Spencer Middle School Courts.

In the singles first round, Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Pedro Fagundes fell to Tye Penne of Le Mars in 3 sets.  Tyler Kohn of Cherokee dropped in 3 sets to Sebastian Cortez of Storm Lake.  Spencer’s Emmet Ebner would lose to Zeke Funston of Estherville Lincoln Central in two sets.  Robbie Gerlock of Spencer dropped to Ian Deruyter in two sets.  Cherokee’s Thomas Ruschmann would advance with a 2-set win against Estherville Lincoln Central’s Samson Mittrucker.  Landon Moore of Storm Lake fell in the first round to Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Easton Boettcher 2 sets to 0.

For the Singles Quarterfinals, Estherville Lincoln Central’s Funston came away with a 2-set win against Storm Lake’s Cortez.  Ruschman of Cherokee dropped in 2 sets to Deruyter of Le Mars.  Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Schneider picked up a 2-set win against Boettcher of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

The Singles Semifinals saw Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Tyler Grote advance past Estherville Lincoln Central’s Funston in 2 sets.  Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Schneider would get past Deruyter of Le Mars in 2 sets, advancing to the Championship and punching his ticket to the State Tournament.

It would be Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Grote beating SL/O’s Schneider in the Championship match in 2 sets.

In the Doubles first round, Estherville Lincoln Central’s Lundgren and Rosfjord lost in 3 sets to Albrecht and Koopmans of Le Mars.  Cherokee’s Carey and Hoskinson lost in two sets to Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Riphagen and Gravert.  Spencer’s McDanel and Thomas would pick up a 2-set win against Storm Lake’s Daravong and Almanza.  Cherokee’s doubles team of Devos and Patterson lost in 2 sets to Dather and Gehling of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Harris and Nikkel made it two teams in the Quarterfinals for SL/O with a 2-set win against Hansgaard-Kell and Hang of Storm Lake.

For the Quarterfinals, Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Riphagen and Gravert beat Spencer’s McDanel and Thomas in two sets.  Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Nikkel and Harris lost in two sets to Dather and Gehling of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  Spencer’s Sherrod and Moeller advanced past Camas and Bohlke 2 sets to 0.

The Semifinal round saw Riphagen and Gravert of Spirit Lake/Okoboji drop in 2 sets to Wright and Ouellette of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  Sherrod and Moeller of Spencer locked in a spot for the State Tournament with a 2-set win against Dather and Gehling of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  Colby Sherrod of Spencer talked about some of the things that went well for him and Charlie Moeller in the Doubles Tournament.

Sherrod and Moeller of Spencer would lose in the Championship match 2 sets to 0 to Wright and Ouellette of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  Moeller praised the Sergeant Bluff-Luton teams afterword.

The Tiger Duo now prepares for the State Tournament in Waterloo, beginning on May 27th.  Spencer will compete as a team in the District Tournament coming up on Wednesday when they travel to Waverly as the #3 seed to take on the #2 seed North Polk.  Winner will face either the #1 seed Waverly-Shell Rock or the #4 seed Saydel.  Sherrod and Moeller talked about preparing for a busy couple of weeks.
