Spirit Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — No taste, smell or color, that’s why carbon monoxide is called the silent killer. This morning, Spirit Lake Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide leak near East Lake Okoboji. Three people were treated, but no serious injuries. Chief Pat Daly gives the details.

Light headedness is usually the first symptom.

Daly says if your carbon monoxide detector is more than 10 years old, it needs replaced. Some other tips include having your furnace checked periodically, and watch out for gas appliances. Don’t use your stove for heat, only use generators outdoors, and make sure cars are turned off before closing the garage door.
