Spirit Lake, IA (northwestiowanow) — Members of the Spirit Lake community are hoping to work with school leaders following Tuesday’s defeat of the Spirit Lake Community School District’s bond referendum.

Mike Fergen with Spirit Lake Citizens for Real Progress says the group’s “Vote No” effort received 61% support from voters across the district.

One of the largest concerns raised throughout the campaign was the speed at which the proposal moved from approval to the ballot.

Fergen says the organization is not opposed to improving school facilities, but believes residents should have a greater role in shaping future plans.

Looking ahead, Fergen says the organization hopes to meet with school officials and continue discussions about future facility improvements while working toward a plan that reflects both district needs and taxpayer concerns.
