Spirit Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The Spirit Lake School Board received a facilities study last week. The architect recommends demolishing old portions of the elementary and high schools to be replaced with new construction.

Superintendent Dave Smith says district patrons can give their opinions at a public hearing Wednesday night.

The estimate from Beck Engineering would be 28.5 million dollars for a new gym and classrooms at the elementary. Smith says that might be more economical that putting money into the existing structure.

Adding a new wing and renovating the existing high school to bring industrial arts into the main building would cost an estimated 24.5 million. Smith says they’ve already been told by employers the upgrades are needed.

The public hearing on the Spirit Lake School master plan is at 5:30pm Wednesday at the Sami Center. A decision on construction would be needed soon to place a bond issue on the November 3rd election ballot.
