Spirit Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — When the clock strikes midnight Wednesday night two Dickinson County fire departments will become one.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says his department and Superior have discussed a merger for several years.
All of the towns and townships within the two districts have signed off on the change. The merger pretty much doubles the size of the Spirit Lake district to about 160 square miles including a couple of miles on the Minnesota side of the border.
The Arnolds Park and Okoboji fire departments merged back in 2000. They maintain facilities on both sides of the lake.
