Storm Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has provided an update to the armed standoff and evacuation in Storm Lake yesterday.
Authorities continue to investigate, and the city of Storm Lake has refrained from comment for now while the investigation continues.
The incident began early Sunday morning.  The man involved is Daniel Joseph Palenik, 45 of Storm Lake. The situation started with a car chase by Buena Vista County Deputies Sunday morning. The Palenik ran into a residence at the intersection of 3rd and Oneida where he held authorities at bay for more than twelve hours. Police blocked traffic and told neighbors to either leave or lock their doors and stay away from doors and windows. Late in the afternoon they reported to local media that the individual who was barricaded in the house had fired shots. Shots were fired from Palenik several times in the afternoon and evening. Dozens of rounds were shot at officers, striking both occupied vehicles and law enforcement equipment. Shortly before 3 a.m. today (Jan 27) Palenik again fired at law enforcement. Officers returned fire, striking Palenik. He died at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave consistent with department policy. This is an ongoing investigation, and no more details have been released.

Numerous law enforcement agencies were involved including Storm Lake Police, Buena Vista Sherriff, Iowa State Patrol, State Fire Marshal’s office, as well as agencies from Sioux City, Woodbury County, Sac County, Sioux County, Fort Dodge, Webster County, Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s office.
