Storm Lake, IA (northwestiowanow) — The City of Storm Lake is conducting its annual fire hydrant flushing program this month.

The city’s Water Department is flushing hydrants throughout the community as part of routine maintenance to ensure they are ready for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that can accumulate in water mains.

Crews are currently working in Zones 2 and 4 and will continue moving generally from west to east across the city.

Residents may notice brief reductions in water pressure or temporary water discoloration when hydrants in their area are flushed. City officials recommend checking water from the cold-water faucet nearest the water meter before use. If discoloration or an odor is present, running the water for five to seven minutes will typically clear the issue.

Residents are also advised to avoid washing laundry until any discoloration has cleared.

Anyone experiencing persistent water discoloration or other issues is encouraged to contact Storm Lake City Hall at 712-732-8000.

The hydrant flushing program is expected to continue through the end of October, weather permitting.
