Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The Iowa Lakes Corridor lost an influential businessman, community leader, and philanthropist Thursday. Toby Shine passed away at the age of 82. He went to work full-time at the family business in 1960, eventually becoming President and owner. The company website says two far-sited decisions in the firm’s history were to invest in wire-cutting technology in the 1980s, and a state-of-the art car shredder in 2005.

Herman Richter from Milford says Shine was an early and ardent supporter of regional economic development.

Sue Richter from Milford worked with Shine during the effort to save the amusement park from the wrecking ball in 1999.

Shine also served on the Wahpeton City Council. In recent years his passion was Okoboji Classic Cars – a restoration shop and museum in Milford.  A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, November 17th at 11am at Riverside Cemetery.
