Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls and Boys Basketball teams hosted Mason City on Tuesday night for some non-conference action.

It was a slow start for both teams in the girls contest, as neither the Riverhawks nor Tigers were able to finish much from the field. Spencer, a 64.7% free throw shooting team, had plenty of opportunities at the line, but went 3 for 8 from the stripe. Spencer’s full court press caused all sorts of issues for Mason City, and the Tigers trailed 8-7 after the first quarter.

Spencer outscored the Riverhawks in the 2nd quarter 12-6. Kennedy Greattinger was able to get the scoring rolling a little better, hitting a pair of 3 pointers. Addison Olson finished off a really strong 1st half with a couple of baskets while crashing the boards for the Tigers. Spencer led 19-14 going into the break.

In the 3rd quarter, both teams had some sloppy offensive play, and foul trouble began to pile up for the Tigers. Dakota Lux, Avery McEntee, and Addison Olson each finished the game with 3 or more fouls. Spencer still had the edge going into the final quarter 30-25.

The Tiger defense was able to suffocate Mason City in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Riverhawks 9-2 in the final 8 minutes to win 39-27.

Spencer was led in scoring by Kennedy Greattinger on the night with 15 points. The Junior hit 4 3-pointers on the evening, the only Tiger scorer to hit one from beyond the arc on the evening. Spencer improves to 6-3 on the year with their 3rd consecutive win.

Magalli Gonzalez, Gracyn Braun, and Anna Latham all scored 6 in the loss for the Riverhawks. This is the 3rd straight loss for Mason City as they go to 3-7 on the year.

The Spencer boys got off to a strong start, outscoring Mason City 14-9 in the 1st quarter. Dylan Timmer came out strong in his first game back from his injury he sustained on December 2nd.

The Tigers were able to build their lead as high as 9 in the 2nd quarter but went cold offensively just as soon as the Riverhawks began to roll, as Mason City charged back to tie the game at the half 27-27.

Spencer struggled to finish shots in the 3rd quarter, and Mason City got 13 points in that frame alone from Ty Sanchez-Evans as the Riverhawks outscored the Tigers 19-8 and led 46-35 going into the 4th.

In the 4th quarter, Spencer was unable to every get much closer than 7 points as Mason City came away with a 62-54 win.

Ty Sanchez-Evans led the Riverhawks with 23 points on the evening. Carcele Whitner added 13 and Drayden Witt 10 as Mason City improves to 4-5 on the year with their 3rd win in 4 games.

Spencer drops to 1-7 and were led by Foster Roos who scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half. Dylan Timmer added 14 in the loss.
