Sioux City, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls and Boys basketball teams were on the road Thursday night to take on West of Sioux City.

The Tiger girls couldn’t get the offense going in the first half, struggling against the press from the Wolverines, and trailed 34-12 going into the 3rd.

The Tigers would score 12 in the 3rd quarter, but West struck for 24 and held a 58-24 lead going into the fourth.

Spencer couldn’t make up the ground, and West cruised to a 69-35 route.

The Wolverines had all five starters in double figures. Hannah Burg led the way, hitting 5 3-pointers en route to a 17-point night.

Kennedy Graettinger, Dakota Lux, and Avery McEntee each score 6 for Spencer in the loss.

The Tigers are now 4-16 on the year and have dropped their 12th straight game.

West’s strong year continues as they are now 14-6 going into their final regular season contest.

In the Boys game, the Spencer defense stifled the Wolverines early, holding them to only 5 first quarter points. It was a slow start in the 2nd for the Tigers, but they would close the half on a strong run to lead 32-19.

Offense was hard to come by in the 3rd, but Spencer grew their lead to 17 going into the final quarter.

West would get the deficit all the way down to 8, but Spencer held off any comeback attempt to win 55-43.

Cael Bruning had 19 and Jack Berends had 13, each making big plays down the stretch for the Tigers. 8 different players scored for the Wolverines, with only Kamren Hegna in double figures at 11.

West of Sioux City is now 2-18 on the year after their 5th straight loss.

Spencer has won only 5 of their last 13 and hope to finish the year on their first winning streak since early January.

Next up for the Wolverine boys is a matchup across the Big Sioux River with Dakota Valley. The girls open up regional play on Tuesday against Jefferson of Council Bluffs.

Both the Spencer boys and girls are back on the road Friday to play LeMars.
