Cherokee, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Lakes Conference play opened up on Friday night as Spencer hit the road to play Cherokee.

In the Girls contest, Cherokee used 4 first quarter 3-pointers to outscore Spencer 17-13.

The 2nd quarter was much sloppier for Spencer offensively. Cherokee was able to grow their lead to 10 as the teams went into the half with the Braves up 29-19.

Spencer struggled to make shots and the turnovers continued to pile up in the 3rd. Cherokee was able to force a lot more live ball Turnovers as the Braves exploded to a 19-point quarter, leading 48-30 going into the 4th.

Cherokee would coast from there, taking the game 59-39.

The Braves improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in Lakes Conference play with the win. Addy Wolfswinkel hit 3 triples on the evening on her way to 20 points while Deidra Doeden added 18 for the Braves.

Spencer is now 3-3 on the season and drop to 0-1 in league play. Sydnee Hopkins led 8 Spencer scorers with 15 points.

For the Boys game, a back-and-forth 1st quarter saw Cherokee take an 18-14 lead. Coy Lewis got going early for the Braves and the fouls piled up early for the Tigers.

Cherokee really went hard after the paint in the 2nd. Coy Lewis was able to get a couple of shots to go through fouls and capitalized on both free-throws. The Braves led 31-23 at the half.

The Tigers were able to bounce back in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Cherokee 17-12 and led at one point as well, but Cherokee led going into the 4th 43-40.

Spencer couldn’t get that offense going again in the 4th as Cherokee pulled away to win 58-48.

Cherokee remains unbeaten on the year at 4-0 and start the Lakes Conference slate at 1-0. Coy Lewis scored 24 in the win for the Braves. Jaxon Paulsrud and Christian Vander Broek were both in double figures as well.

Spencer’s search for their first win continues as they drop to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in the Lakes Conference. Tate Vonehwegen scored 15 in the loss for the Tigers with Drew Piercy adding 11.
