Sheldon, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — A fire in a large tree pile in Sheldon Sunday morning is considered to be suspicious in origin.
The Fire Department was called to 1103 Railroad Avenue on the Southwest outskirts of town shortly after midnight, and was on the scene for over six hours trying to keep the embers from blowing and causing damage to surrounding structures.
Firefighters used a 5 inch supply line from the closest hydrant about a thousand foot away and sprayed about 150 thousand gallons on the blaze while the property owner arranged for two excavators to break up the piles of logs.
Value of the trees is estimated at thirty thousand dollars.
The Sheldon Fire Department was assisted by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Department, Sheldon Police Department, and Sheldon Community Ambulance Team. At one point a firefighter was taken to the hospital to be checked out and was released.
