Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – It was Lakes Conference Softball in action Thursday night in Spencer as the Tigers hosted Spirit Lake.
The two teams met on Monday, going 10 innings with Spencer winning 6-4.
It was a nice battle between the pitchers as Jersey Vail got the start for Spencer after throwing all 10 innings on Monday, and Avery Beisell was in the circle for Spirit Lake.
Neither team was able to push across any runs in the first couple of innings.
After Striking out the side in the top of the 3rd, Jersey Vail came to the plate in the bottom half, knocking in Jasmyn Christensen to give Spencer a 1-0 lead.
Spencer took that 1 run lead into the 4th inning. In the top half, Kaitlynn Trautman hit a sharp grounder up the middle that vail snagged off to her left.
Spencer struck for their second run in the bottom of the 4th inning when Taylor Larson brought Dakota Lux home.
Spencer would leave the bases loaded at the end of that inning though, only taking a 2-0 lead into the top of the 5th inning, which was cut in half on a Abby Scott RBI, bringing in Isabelle Vader Leest.
The Tigers would get that run right back in the bottom of the 5th with Dakota Lux knocking in Mercedes Kreig.
Facing a 3-1 deficit in the top of the 6th, Spirit Lake managed to get Kinley Dodds on with 2 outs, but she was caught stealing on her 2nd attempt of the season by Lucy Simington connecting with Brynn Merchant.
Spencer would hold on from there, as Vail struck out 3 more in the 7th inning, giving her a whopping 13 strikeouts on the night and Spencer the 3-1 win. In 10 innings against Spirit Lake the first time around, Vail had struck out 10.
Dakota Lux had a strong night from the 6 spot for Spencer, scoring a run on 2 hits and collecting an RBI.
Spencer is now 7-4 on the year and 4-2 in the Lakes Conference. They will play North of Sioux City at home on Monday.
Spirit Lake has lost their 5th straight and drop to 2-12 with a league record of 0-4. Next up for them is a road trip to Cherokee as they seek their first Conference win.
