WEST BEND, IA (Northwestiowanow) — The Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend is receiving statewide recognition for its impact on tourism.

The Grotto has been awarded a 2026 Geode Award, presented by the Iowa Tourism Office during the annual Iowa Tourism Conference in Altoona. The Shrine was one of seven tourism organizations across Iowa selected for the honor.

Rose Walker, Director of Operations at the Grotto, says the recognition came as a complete surprise.

Founded in 2024, the Geode “You Rock” Awards recognize tourism organizations that demonstrate dedication, creativity, and a positive impact on their destination.

Walker says the award reflects the efforts of the staff and volunteers who help operate and maintain the historic site.

Often referred to as the unofficial “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Grotto has drawn visitors to West Bend since 1912.

Started by Father Paul Doberstein and completed in 1995, Walker says ongoing upkeep and preservation remain a constant priority.

Walker says the recognition is expected to help boost visitation, especially during the summer season. Along with the award, the Grotto has also received an Iowa Tourism grant to advertise outside the state, with video promotions running from March through November.

The Grotto grounds are open year-round.
