Spirit Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — After three nights of testimony – one going over six hours – the Dickinson County Board of Adjustment has voted unanimously to approve a construction permit for sixty-three 591-foot-tall wind turbines.

The discussion was often emotional. Many in opposition say they have read about, heard about, or experienced noise created by the electric generators. Dickinson County resident Scott Reuter says it forced his family out of their rural residence.

Attorney Samantha Norris speaking for Invenergy – the company in charge of the Red Wind project – told the board they have met every requirement enumerated in the county’s zoning code.

The five-member panel added three amendments to the agreement

Jeff Ashland, Cody Berhow, Susan Clark, Alex Oponski, and Douglas Westerman all voted yes. Those supporting the massive effort say it will be an economic boon for Dickinson County. Many detractors say it will kill the golden goose of tourism. Only future generations will know if either side was prescient.
