Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Spencer Radio Group stations had a full slate of High School Basketball on Friday night.
On News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD, Spencer hosted Storm Lake in a Lakes Conference battle.
In the Girls contest, Storm Lake blitzed Spencer, scoring 24 points and holding the Tigers to 5. Storm Lake got that lead as high as 23 but Spencer would bounce back though in the 2nd, outscoring the Tornadoes 16-10 to pull within 13 going into the half. The Tigers put together another strong quarter in the 3rd, pulling within 6 of Storm Lake going into the 4th. The Tornadoes would do enough to hold of Spencer, though, and pulled away to win 60-49.
Storm Lake would get 21 points from Adeeya Yanga in the win with Grace Kenkel adding 18.
Spencer would hit 12 three pointers in the loss, with Braylee Haldin hitting 6, leading the Tigers with 18, and Sydnee Hopkins knocking down 4 on her way to a 17-point night.
Storm Lake improves to 8-5 on the season and picks up their first Lakes Conference win at 1-3.
Spencer drops their 4th straight and 5th of their last 6 games, now 4-9 on the year and 0-3 in the Lakes Conference.
For the Boys game, the Storm Lake offense got rolling early and never let up. The Tornadoes burst out of the gate, outscoring Spencer 25-18 in the first quarter. Storm Lake would extend that lead in the 2nd quarter and led 45-31 at the half. Spencer wasn’t able to figure out anything defensively in the 3rd as far as slowing down the Tornado offense, allowing 21 more points. Storm Lake would coast to an 83-60 win.
Storm Lake Junior Forward Jaidyn Coon went off for 34 points on the evening. The Tornadoes also had David William with 15 and Cam Boyd with 16 in the win.
Jack Berends led Spencer with 18 on the evening in the loss.
Storm Lake is now 8-1 on the year and stay undefeated in Lakes Conference play at 4-0.
Spencer has lost 4 of their last 5 and are now 7-5 with a Conference record of 1-2.
Coming up next for Storm Lake will be a Saturday afternoon home game against OABCIG tomorrow.
Spencer is also back in action tomorrow with a road trip to Algona.
