SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – The Clay County Board of Supervisors formally recognized the county’s jail correctional officers following a successful state inspection of the Clay County Jail.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 10, the board expressed appreciation for the correctional staff’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and well-managed facility. The inspection, conducted by state officials in accordance with Iowa Code, evaluated key areas such as inmate safety, facility cleanliness, dietary standards, and operational procedures.

Sheriff Chris Raveling praised his team’s consistent performance, emphasizing that the jail’s high standards aren’t just for inspections, but are upheld year-round.

We asked Sheriff Raveling what goes into the inspection process.

Raveling highlighted the professionalism of the jail staff, as well as the positive feedback they receive—even from inmates.

Raveling also thanked the board for recognizing the jailers. Although they don’t often receive public recognition, their dedication helps the county continue to meet and exceed state standards, ensuring safety, compliance, and respect.
