Storm Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) – After four years of dedicated service to Storm Lake and the surrounding area, Fire Chief Schlesser is moving on to a new role that’ll bring him closer to family.

City Manager Keri Navratil praised Chief Schlesser’s exceptional four years, highlighting his dedication to protecting Storm Lake residents and serving the wider region through collaborative efforts. She expressed the City’s pleasure in working with him and extended best wishes for his future endeavors.

During his time here, Chief Schlesser played a key role in boosting the Storm Lake Fire Department’s readiness, training, and overall modernization. He spearheaded major improvements in how the department prepares for emergencies and conducts training. He also led efforts to update the department’s equipment and operations.

Beyond internal improvements, Chief Schlesser kicked off several successful community outreach programs. These included the annual Open House events, Fire Prevention Week presentations throughout the community, and the introduction of a mobile fire safety educational unit. He was also instrumental in hosting a Regional Fire School, which offered crucial training for firefighters from across the state, and he launched a Junior Firefighters program to encourage community service and inspire the next generation.

Chief Schlesser’s commitment to education and training didn’t go unnoticed. Earlier this year, he was honored with the 2025 Instructor of the Year Award at the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors conference.

As the Storm Lake Fire Department prepares for new leadership, City Manager Navratil wants to assure the public that the department remains strong and ready to continue serving the community whenever called upon. The City is committed to a smooth transition during this time.
