ESTHERVILLE, IA (Northwestiowanow) – A new state law is changing how fireworks are regulated across Iowa. With the Fourth of July approaching, Estherville Police Chief Brent Shatto is reminding residents to stay safe and respectful.

The law, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds, allows fireworks to be discharged on July 3rd, 4th, and December 31st. It also prevents cities and counties from enforcing local ordinances that restrict firework use on those dates. For Estherville, this means the city’s more restrictive rules will not apply this year.

Since the law was signed, the city has not yet had time to revise its ordinance to align with the new regulations. Shatto confirms that Estherville will follow state code for this year’s holiday.

Estherville has historically received a high number of fireworks-related complaints. Shatto acknowledged that the change could present more challenges. He emphasizes that everyone should use caution and have consideration for others remain a top priority.

Although the city ordinance won’t be enforced on those legal dates, the police department may still respond to complaints under other applicable laws. Shatto encourages residents to celebrate, but to do so responsibly.
