Northwest Iowa (KICD) — We have several counties without primary races this spring, but a couple with primary contests, and one with a very crowded ballot.

In Cherokee County, incumbent Sheriff Derek Scott has a challenge from Cherokee Police officer Zachary L. Smith.
There four candidates seeking the nomination for the district one supervisor seat. incumbent Rick Mongan is joined by Chad Brown, Ray E. Mullins the 2nd, and Phil Stowater. In the 5th district Matthew Aguirre Jr., Shane Bellefy, Craig Schmidt, Timothy R. Wych, and Stephanie Zarr are squaring off. incumbent Duane Mummert is not seeking re-election.

Incumbent district 2 supervisor Bryan Petersen, incumbent Auditor Kris Glienke, and incumbent Treasurer Jodi B. Mongan – who was appointed to the position – are all unchallenged.

There are several contested matches in O’Brien County as well. Long-time Auditor Barb Rohwer has announced her retirement as an elected government employee, however she’s not done with politics. She is running for County Supervisor in district two against incumbent John Steensma. In district number one, incumbent Timothy Overmire is facing a challenge from Jim Thomas, and in district number three incumbent Nancy McDowell is facing a challenge from Shenelle Matus.
Rhea Schmalen is the only candidate to file for Auditor, and incumbent Sheriff Bruce Devereaux is seeking re-election unchallenged. They are both Republicans.

Buena Vista, Osceola, and Palo Alto Counties have no challenged races. Pocahontas County has not released its final candidate list. We previously told you about contested race in the June 4th primaries in Clay, Dickinson, and Emmet Counties.
