Storm Lake, IA (NorthwestIowaNow) — The City of Storm Lake has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would increase municipal infraction fines.
During a regular city council meeting Monday, City Manager Steve Olesen told council members the proposal stems from discussions held during two recent work sessions.
Olesen noted the ordinance applies only to city code sections dealing with property maintenance and nuisances and would not affect penalties associated with other municipal infractions.
He added Storm Lake currently has some of the lowest penalties among similarly sized communities in the region.
Before the public hearing, Olesen outlined the specifics of the proposed changes.
During council discussion, Councilman Don Piercy Jr. asked how repeat violations would be tracked over time and whether offenses would carry over from year to year.
Olesen said the city uses a 12-month cycle when determining repeat offenses.
No one spoke during the public hearing, either in person or online.
Following discussion, the council voted 5-0 to approve the ordinance on its first reading.
The measure will now move through the remaining required readings before it can take effect.
