Spencer, IA — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought conditions continuing to improve across northwest Iowa following several rounds of rainfall over the past few weeks. Much of the region is now either drought-free or classified as Abnormally Dry rather than being in an official drought category. The remaining areas of Moderate Drought are limited to a small part of northwest Iowa, marking a significant improvement compared to recent weeks.

Statewide, Iowa saw one of the biggest improvements in the latest report. Nearly 88 percent of the state is now free of drought conditions. Much of that improvement came across western and northwest Iowa, where recent rainfall helped boost soil moisture and improve water conditions.

While the rain has helped erase drought concerns in many locations, it has also created new challenges for farmers. Saturated fields and muddy conditions are beginning to slow harvest activity across northwest Iowa. Additional rainfall is expected through the weekend and into early next week, which could lead to further drought improvement but may also result in continued harvest delays across the region.
