Spencer, IA (KICD) — The City of Spencer emergency crews have been working diligently through the night to mitigate flooding.  The incident command center has been established and emergency personnel are working with citizens who may need evacuation and other emergency needs.

Due to heavy rains and flood waters cresting at historic levels, continuing to rise from the Little Sioux and Ocheyedan rivers, all roads into Spencer have been closed.  This is an emergency situation and citizens should shelter in place if they are able.  The city sewer plant was inundated and is no inoperable.  There will be no sewer service for the next 24-48 hours with updates provided as available.

Citizens should not flush toilets or use water reserves unless absolutely necessary.  Southwest Spencer is without power at this time.  Sandbags have been prepared by volunteers and are available at the sand station at Pedersen Park.  Shelters have been opened at the following locations:

Faith Pentecostal Church

Spencer Senior Center (Occasions)

Spencer Congregational Church

Citizens should call the Spencer Emergency Call Center at 712-264-8407 for non-medical emergencies.

There have been sporadic power outages throughout the city.  Citizens should stay home and not attempt to address or approach any downed power lines.
