Spencer, IA (KICD) — The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa DNR have identified a single male occupant who drown in the flooding waters of the Little Sioux River east of Spencer.

According to the Clay County Communication Center, William Schulze of Elburn, Illinois was driving a Red Ford F-150, attempting to cross rapid flood waters on 240th Ave in the 3400 mile on Saturday. The vehicle, with Schulze inside, was swept away by the flood waters.

When emergency personnel arrived, a witness stated the vehicle floated out of sight and disappeared to the East. Officials were able to search the area by boat and found the pickup in the tree line. It was determined the driver was deceased. However, recovery efforts were not attempted, due to the very dangerous situations. On Tuesday the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa DNR, Iowa State Patrol and Spencer Ambulance were able to extricate and recover Schulze’s body.

The Sheriff’s Office later learned that the victim was reported missing in Illinois two days ago.
