Okoboji, IA (KICD) — Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Balloun is repeating his warning not to drive under bridges after another vehicle fell through the ice on East Okoboji Saturday.

This time an unidentified 83 year old man went through the ice in a Jeep, attempting to cross from East to West Lake under the highway 71 bridge.

A news release from the Sheriff’s department Saturday said the man and his dog were pulled to safety by five men who went in after him: Corey McConnell and Joe Salmon from Spirit Lake, Cody Chester from Estherville, Chris Park from Hawardan, and Kody Harrelsen from Nevada.

Okoboji PD, Arnolds Park / Okoboij Rescue, and Lakes Regional Healthcare Paramedics were also on the scene.

Two vehicles went through that exact spot during winter games weekend with no known injuries. Sheriff Balloun says it’s NEVER safe to drive under a bridge, and the ice in that particular location is bad because of strong underwater currents between the two lakes.
