Spencer, IA (KICD)– There has been a lot of talk around the nation in the recent past over government regulations telling schools what kind of topics can be discussed or in some cases what teachers in training can be prepared for and that does not sit well with some local residents.

The question that become one of the biggest topics of discussion at Saturday’s Eggs and Issues political forum revolved around why the State of Iowa feels the need to make these decisions just weeks after passing a bill essentially giving parents the choice on where to send their children to school.

Senator Dave Rowley of Spirit Lake says, from his point of view, the government is getting involved because the people are the government.

Representative John Wills of Spirit Lake says this debate has led to some people being singled out because of beliefs or lifestyle but would like to see it more equal treatment like when he served in the armed forces.

Senator Lynn Evans of Cherokee added to the conversation by saying there may some topics that maybe should not be formally taught to younger age groups but that never means the questions are not going to come up making it important for school officials to be prepared.

Representative Megan Jones became emotional during the discussion while saying attempts at legislation that comes off as the government attacking certain people can have some very sad consequences.
