Spencer, IA (KICD)—We have made it to the fifth and final day of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa with attention turning to perhaps one of the more overlooked, but yet most dangerous hazards…flooding.

It may be difficult to believe that flooding can be a concern in Northwest Iowa after hearing so much about drought over the past two years, but flood waters can be some of the most dangerous when they are least expected as experienced by Dustin Jordan with the National Weather Service in Jackson, Kentucky less than a year ago.

Jordan adds flooding can be about much more than just a sudden rise or rush of water, especially when rivers and streams come into play.

As always if you are out and about when a flood occurs it is important to remember not to drive or travel through a flooded area being that it can be impossible to know not only how deep the water is, but also how fast it may be moving or whether or not there is actually anything solid left underneath.
