Des Moines, IA (northwestiowanow.com) — The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to promote designated driving during the holiday season. Through January 1, 2025, officers will support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s campaign to raise awareness about impaired driving.
Last December, 990 drivers were arrested for OWI in Iowa, with impaired driving contributing to 37% of the state’s traffic fatalities. GTSB urges Iowans to plan ahead and avoid driving drunk, with options like designated drivers, taxis, and rideshares available. An OWI conviction can cost up to $10,000, making it far cheaper to opt for a safe ride home. If you see an impaired driver, contact law enforcement immediately.
