Des Monies, IA (northwestiowanow) — The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) has reported the first human case of avian influenza A(H5) in the state. The individual, who works with a commercial poultry flock in northwest Iowa, was exposed to infected birds and is recovering after experiencing mild symptoms. The case was confirmed through testing by the State Hygienic Laboratory and the CDC.

As of December 20, 2024, the CDC has confirmed 64 human cases of H5 avian influenza across nine states, mostly linked to exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows. There is no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the U.S.

Health officials recommend those with direct contact with exposed animals wear protective gear and seek medical advice if flu-like symptoms or eye infections develop. There is no risk to the safety of eggs, poultry, or pasteurized dairy products when properly handled and cooked.
