Des Moines, IA — State Climatologist Justin Glisan breaks down the numbers for Northwest Iowa and the Spencer COOP station for the month of August. Precipitation was near normal, while temperatures were slightly above average.

Soil moisture levels look good across portions of the state as Iowa approaches harvest season. However, Glisan remains concerned about areas experiencing drought conditions that developed throughout the summer and continue into early fall across Northwest Iowa, as well as areas that have received excessive rainfall, resulting in saturated soils. Farmers who are not dealing with either extreme are currently ahead of schedule.

Outlooks are hinting at warmer-than-normal temperatures and wetter-than-normal conditions for the first half of September.
