PRIMGHAR, IA (Northwestiowanow) – A Spirit Lake man originally charged with attempted murder has been sentenced to prison after reaching a plea agreement.
According to court records, 33-year-old Jonathan Douglas Oldenkamp of Spirit Lake entered guilty pleas in O’Brien County on June 29.
Oldenkamp pleaded guilty to one count of Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Bodily Injury and two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations Causing Bodily Injury, all Class D felonies.
As part of the agreement, an additional charge of Attempted Murder, a Class B felony, was dismissed by the court.
The charges stem from an incident on May 25, 2025, when authorities alleged Oldenkamp fired at another vehicle while driving on Highway 18 near Hartley. Court records state the vehicle was struck multiple times and the driver suffered a gunshot wound before driving himself to Sheldon Hospital for treatment.
Oldenkamp was charged with the two assault offenses in a separate case. Authorities alleged he injured a law enforcement officer and a sheriff’s deputy while they were attempting to remove him from a patrol vehicle at the O’Brien County Jail.
Oldenkamp was sentenced to five years in prison on each of the three felony counts. The two assault sentences will be served concurrently, while the firearm sentence will be served consecutively, resulting in a total prison term of 10 years.
